Exercise is an important component of a medical weight loss plan, but it should be part of a healthy lifestyle for anyone. After all, if we all exercised daily as a regular habit, many of us might not end up needing weight loss plans at all!
But if you’re like most people, you probably don’t exercise daily – or even weekly. And why is that? We tend to assume that the reasons come down to lack of time or desire. But actually, it’s even simpler than that. A 2011 study found that people tend not to exercise because of their perception of convenience.
How does convenience trump exercise for so many of us? Just consider the last time you signed up for a gym. Maybe you picked the one with the fanciest equipment or the trendiest classes. But if you didn’t end up using your membership very often, it’s probably because the gym wasn’t convenient. When we have to pack up a bag and drive across town, we tend to put off tasks that require all of this planning.
If you choose a gym right down the street, odds are good that you will use it more often. It’s really that simple!
So if you can, try to incorporate the notion of convenience into your exercise regimen. Establish a daily schedule that allows for bursts of activity. Choose a gym that is located nearby. Keep a packed bag in your car, with everything you need for exercise. Purchase your favorite machine (perhaps an elliptical or stationary bike) for use at home on busy days.
And the notion of convenience can extend to your overall medical weight loss plan, too. Set yourself up for success by making healthy food available at home and your office, so that you’re not tempted to make less healthy, more convenient choices.
