If you’re a fan of Dr. Oz, you’ve likely heard him talk about the weight loss effects of raspberry ketones. In fact, even if you never watch his show, you probably have heard a friend mention raspberry ketones or maybe you have seen something online or in a magazine. So just in case you are wondering “What’s all the fuss about?” I’ll take just a few minutes of your time to provide some details.
Raspberry ketone is a chemical compound found naturally in, you guessed it, raspberries. It can also be found in cranberries and blackberries. However, the amount found in the actual berries is very low and extremely expensive to extract so most of the supplements that you find on store shelves are synthetically manufactured.
Laboratory tests have been performed with rats and mice which indicate that raspberry ketones are effective in lipid metabolism (fat burning). In April of 2013, a study was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition involving humans. This study involved double-blind testing with a group of 70 individuals, half of which were given a multi-ingredient compound of natural weight loss supplements, one being raspberry ketones. After 8 weeks of the dietary supplementation, those who were administered the compound showed a significant difference in body weight and fat loss.
In toxicity studies with rats, subjects were given doses ranging from 238 to over 4000 times the estimated intake of humans and no adverse effects were recorded. However, as with any weight loss supplement, consulting a physician prior to using raspberry ketones is the best practice. Allergies are always possible with supplements so carefully monitored use is recommended. The FDA categorizes raspberry ketones with a GRAS rating (Generally Regarded as Safe).
