6 Ways to Improve Your Balance

When you think of physical fitness, you probably envision yourself reaching a certain weight loss goal. You might also picture a fitness goal, such as being able to jog a mile or lift heavier weights. Most people don’t think about balance, but it is actually incredibly important to your overall fitness.

Why? Balance not only helps you to keep correct form during exercise, leading to better results; good balance also prevents injury. Both during exercise and throughout the course of each day, any of us could experience a bad fall that leads to a twisted ankle or worse. Aside from medical bills and pain, you might become significantly set back in your fitness goals or weight loss plan.

So even though it’s not the glamorous or “fun” part of overall fitness, balance is definitely important! Use these six methods to improve yours.

  • Chair squats
  • Single leg deadlifts
  • “Dead bugs”
  • “Bird dogs”
  • Floating lunges
  • Planks (with reaching) and forearm side planks

Google these moves to learn the proper form, and take it slow at first. Remember, as with most body weight moves, that correct form is the key to getting your best results from the exercise. Perform these moves in front of a mirror if needed, or ask a workout buddy to help correct your posture.

Additionally, many yoga asanas will help you achieve better balance, as will any exercise that targets your abdominal core. A diversified workout plan is the best way to achieve overall fitness, while also combating boredom. Try any of these suggestions in combination with one another, and switch it up regularly to keep yourself motivated.
