4 Steps to Analyze Your Cravings

Throughout our experience working with patients on medical weight loss plans, we’ve encountered numerous challenges. Fortunately, we’ve also gained valuable insights on how to overcome these obstacles.

One common issue we frequently address is the feeling of constant hunger leading to the temptation to “cheat” on a meal plan. While true hunger does occur, often other factors mimic these feelings. Before reaching for a snack, it’s essential to analyze these possibilities. Ask yourself if you might be feeling…

Stress. Stress triggers cravings for sugary or carb-rich foods, as they boost serotonin levels in the brain. Although momentarily satisfying, they sabotage weight loss efforts. Instead of snacking, consider alternative stress-relief methods or seek therapy if needed.

Dehydration. Dehydration can cause headaches and hunger-like sensations. Check your urine color; dark or bright yellow indicates dehydration. Drink water regularly to stay hydrated and curb false hunger pangs.

Sleep Troubles. Poor sleep patterns disrupt hormone levels, including those that control appetite. The body seeks quick energy sources, leading to cravings for sugary or comforting foods. Prioritize quality sleep and address sleep issues to manage hunger cravings.

Boredom. Sometimes, we eat out of boredom. If you find yourself mindlessly snacking during slow periods, engage in activities to distract yourself. Keep busy to avoid unnecessary snacking.
